Before studying at the University, he worked in a steel mill for seven years as an industrial electronics technician in Dortmund. In 1985 he obtained his doctorate with a study about the line in drawing under Gottfried Boehm and Max Imdahl in Bochum. Subsequently, he was employed at the “Staatliche Konservatoramt” in Saarbrücken. In 1998 he was habilitated in the field of study “media theory and art history” by Bazon Brock in Wuppertal. From 1987 to 1992 he was a research associate at the University of Arts in Berlin. Then, he got a lectureship in the field of education in contemporary fine arts at different universities and art academies. Besides lecturing, he ran a multimedia business (MIB) for ten years and has been on the board of the “Werkbund Archiv” in Berlin, and from 2002 until 2004 he was in charge of the study group “Critique of Image Media”. In 1999 he established an interdisciplinary research project (Cultrans) that entails numerous funded study trips (Gibilmanna 1999, Cairo 2001, Johannesburg 2003, Mexico City 2005, Hongkong 2007, Jerusalem 2008, Mumbay 2009 and others). Cultrans examines cultural transfers that take place between cultures and arts. Focus of the intercultural project “Cultrans” has been Israel for seven years. Since 2010 Arthur Engelbert has been a member of the DFG-Graduiertenkolleg “Sichtbarkeit- und Sichtbarmachung” at the University of Potsdam.
